James Hardie Garage Conversion ADU: The Woodland Hills Owner’s Guide
If your James Hardie garage conversion ADU has failed siding, rotted trim, or water getting behind the boards, we stock and install James Hardie-compatible siding panels, trim, and accessories for garage conversions in Woodland Hills. Typical installed repair cost for a failing section runs $850 to $2,400 depending on how far the damage has traveled and whether we’re pulling old material or working around existing framing. Most single-wall repairs are done in one day once we’re on site. What owners usually notice first is a soft spot near the bottom course, paint bubbling along the bottom edge, or a musty smell coming from the wall cavity.
We’re Fielding ADU Woodland Hills, an independent ADU and garage conversion contractor. We are not affiliated with James Hardie. What we are is a company that works with HardiePlank, HardiePanel, HardieTrim, and HardieSoffit every week on garage-to-ADU conversions across the West Valley.
Reed Calloway, our owner, grew up in Los Angeles and has spent the better part of two decades building in the West Valley, from properties near Warner Center to backyards a block off Ventura Boulevard. He learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, where the instructors had no patience for shortcuts. Neither does he. When a Woodland Hills garage conversion shows failed James Hardie siding, the cause is almost always an installation detail, not the product itself. We fix both.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

Most Woodland Hills garage conversions built in the last 15 years use one of three James Hardie lines: HardiePlank lap siding (the horizontal board look), HardiePanel vertical siding (often paired with battens for a board-and-batten garage conversion), or HardieTrim boards around windows, doors, and corners. Each has different dimensions and exposure limits that matter when we’re matching existing material.
HardiePlank comes in 5.25-inch, 6.25-inch, 7.25-inch, and 8.25-inch widths. If we’re replacing a few boards, matching the width and the current paint layer matters. HardiePanel is 4×8 or 4×10 sheets, and HardieTrim comes in 4/4 and 5/4 thicknesses up to 12 inches wide. The gotcha: color and texture. James Hardie changed ColorPlus finish formulations over the years. A panel installed in 2014 may not match a new panel of the same color name in 2025. When we can’t get an exact factory match, we prime and paint the entire repaired elevation so the patch doesn’t telegraph from the street. That’s the kind of detail that keeps a Woodland Hills garage conversion looking right after the repair, not just “fixed.”
We stock common HardiePlank widths, HardiePanel sheets, and HardieTrim profiles on our trucks. For less common sizes or ColorPlus prefinished pieces in a specific sheen, we order from our regular suppliers and typically have material in hand within 48 to 72 hours. We also work with Abodu, Cover, and Dvele prefab ADU panels when a garage conversion uses factory-finished wall systems instead of field-installed siding.
Signs Your James Hardie Garage Conversion ADU Is Failing
- Bubbling or peeling paint at the bottom 12 inches. This usually means the siding was installed too close to grade or the drip edge failed. Water wicks upward and breaks the paint bond. The underlying fiber cement may still be sound, but the moisture source has to be corrected before repainting.
- A soft, crumbly section near any window, door, or corner. Fiber cement degrades when water gets behind it through unsealed joints or bad flashing. By the time you can poke a screwdriver into it, the damage has usually been running for a season or more.
- Visible rust staining around nail heads. James Hardie requires corrosion-resistant fasteners. If you’re seeing rust streaks below a nail, the fastener is failing and the board is loosening. This is common on older Woodland Hills garage conversions where standard framing nails were used instead of approved fasteners.
- A musty or earthy smell inside the garage conversion. That’s the wall cavity staying wet. By the time you smell it, there’s likely mold or rot behind the siding and the repair scope includes pulling the boards, drying or replacing sheathing, and rebuilding the affected section.
- Cracks that run vertically through the siding from the bottom edge upward. This pattern usually shows up where the siding butts against a concrete stem wall or slab with no expansion gap. Fiber cement expands and contracts with Woodland Hills temperature swings. No gap means the board presses against the concrete and splits.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Woodland Hills, a straightforward James Hardie siding repair on a garage conversion runs $850 to $2,400 for the typical failing section. A single wall rebuild, where we pull all the siding on one elevation, replace any damaged sheathing, install new housewrap, and re-side, runs $3,500 to $7,500. A full garage conversion re-side in HardiePlank with new trim is typically $18,000 to $34,000 depending on square footage, access, and whether we’re doing the painting or matching factory-finished panels.
What’s included in our price: material, labor, disposal of the old siding, re-flashing around windows and doors if we’re in that section, and paint or factory finish matching. The price you approve in writing is the price you pay. That’s The Garrison Standard. Reed puts every number on paper before work starts, so the number on day one is the number on the final invoice.
Our workmanship is covered under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If something fails inside that year, we return at no charge and make it right. In writing, not as a handshake.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your James Hardie siding. Walk the perimeter of your garage conversion, look at the bottom edge clearance from grade, check nail heads for rust, and run your hand along the boards for soft spots. That tells you what’s wrong.
What we don’t recommend is pulling fiber cement boards yourself. James Hardie siding is heavy. A dropped board breaks, and a broken board along the bottom course means you’re now replacing more than you planned. Cutting fiber cement produces silica dust, which is a respiratory hazard without proper protection. And the most common DIY mistake we see in Woodland Hills is re-nailing boards without fixing the flashing or moisture source, which means the new siding fails the same way the old siding did, just slower. Reed’s take: “Scope in writing. Price in writing. Then we build.” Call (559) 254-0116 and we’ll come inspect it before you decide.
FAQs

James Hardie siding carries a 30-year limited product warranty, and installed correctly with proper clearance, flashing, and paint, it routinely lasts 20 to 30 years in Woodland Hills before needing a full re-side. What fails first around here is almost never the board itself – it’s the paint layer, the caulk joints, and the flashing details. Call (559) 254-0116 if you’re seeing early signs and we’ll tell you exactly what’s failing.
Yes, in most cases a failed section can be cut out and replaced board-by-board or sheet-by-sheet, as long as the sheathing behind it is still sound. We butt the new material to the old, match the profile and texture, and blend the paint. If the moisture has been traveling, the repair scope grows with the damage. We’ll show you what we found before we change the price.
Most single-section repairs on a Woodland Hills garage conversion take one day on site, sometimes two if we’re replacing sheathing or re-flashing a window or door. Full elevation or whole-building re-sides run three to seven working days depending on weather and access.
We keep common HardiePlank widths, HardiePanel sheets, and HardieTrim profiles on our trucks so we can handle most repairs without a supply run. If your garage conversion uses a less common profile or a specific ColorPlus finish that isn’t stocked locally, we order it and usually have it in hand within two to three days. Call (559) 254-0116 and we’ll check what you’ve got.
